TAQA, together with its partner EBN, is constructing the Bergermeer Gas Storage facility near Alkmaar in the Netherlands. The underground storage of natural gas is required over the coming decades to ensure the stable and guaranteed availability of sufficient natural gas in all seasons.

The Task
Mainnovation was engaged by TAQA to support it in developing a best-in-class maintenance blueprint and to subsequently implement this blueprint.
With a focus on its gas storage facilities, TAQA aims to develop an Operations & Maintenance Organization that performs best-in-class and that is based on Value Driven Maintenance. What is interesting is that this concerns a greenfield development and implementation. The development of the blueprint provided due consideration to the management structure, the organizational aspects, the processes, support, and the systems and applications.

The Approach
Mainnovation supplied a Reliability Engineer to create the data needed to be able to use Maximo as the EAM system. The project started off by preparing a functional Asset Breakdown Structure (ABS). In just 3 weeks PIDs and equipment lists were translated into an ABS with 2,500 assets. This ABS structure made it possible to take the next step. Equipment manuals were reviewed and the relevant maintenance information was extracted from them. A 3-person team translated this information into maintenance concepts. In 2½ months, all assets were provided with a maintenance concept. Preventive Maintenance (PM) schedules and task lists were created on this basis. These PM schedules made it possible to create a forecast that indicates when maintenance needs to be performed. This forecast was subsequently used to level the workload across different weeks, months and years (peak-shaving).

Mainnovation’s Added Value
Mainnovation delivered an ABS to TAQA in a very short period of time and contributed to the preparation of 400 PM schedules and 200 standardized task lists. With this ABS and PM schedules, TAQA can now determine the required workload and machine down time, which is very important in order to be able to achieve the high availability targets. Prior to creating the PM schedules, thought was given to the structure, content, consistency and naming of the PM schedules and task lists. This resulted in a high level of quality and in the efficient and fast execution of this project.
