Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland is the oldest water board in the Netherlands and guarantees dry feet and clean water in the area between The Hague, Gouda and Amsterdam.

The task
Rijnland has more than 400 polder pumping stations, these pumping stations pump water into or out of the polders to control the level of water. These pumping stations are built in the last hundred years throughout the region. Controlling and maintaining this is a big challenge. In order to have a clear picture of the necessary long-term investments, Rijnland sought support from Mainnovation to set up a Long Term Asset Planning (LTAP) together.

The approach
The first step of this asset management project was mapping existing installations and collecting the necessary data. Thanks to inspections in the field and searches in the internal archives, the years of the assets were determined as well as the replacement values and other data. The second step was to process this data into a single entity and to draw up an LTAP.
The highlights of this asset management program were:
• Mapping existing assets
• Improve knowledge of existing assets
• Mapping the required long-term investment costs per asset
• Setting up a periodic rest-life analysis program
• Professionalisation of the asset management program for polder pumping stations

Mainnovation’s added value
Mainnovation’s contribution consisted of:
• Knowledge of asset management
• Coaching inspection teams to find a widely supported solution
• Processing all asset data to an LTAP
• Coaching the implementation of the LTAP in the organization
• Analyzing the LTAP

In recent years, significant steps have been taken to get a better picture of our long-term operation of the pumping stations. The involvement and expertise of Mainnovation has ensured that we have not only taken these steps, but can also work on the follow-up ourselves.
